Washington, DC—The Washington DC Auto Show recently provided an incredible platform for students from the University of the District of Columbia’s (UDC) Digital Media, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). As part of their Real 2 Reel project, these aspiring multimedia communicators stepped into the real world of automotive journalism to hone their skills and apply what they learned in the classroom.

“The experience provided a unique opportunity for the students to cover the show, interview industry veterans, and photograph professional auto writers,” said Randi Payton, professor of journalism and an auto writer. “It gave them invaluable networking and insights into the automotive journalism field.”

Among the notable industry figures they interviewed were JAX Automotive, a YouTube Channel; Les Jackson, a respected name in automotive journalism; Alvin Jones of Alvin Jones Communications, known for his significant contributions to Black Entertainment; and Kimatni Kofi Rawlins, producer of the Arts In Motion exhibit. These interactions provided the students with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration and showcased the diverse career paths within the industry.

The Real 2 Reel project is designed to immerse students in real-world journalism, allowing them to refine their skills and build a professional portfolio. Their coverage of the Auto Show will demonstrate their skills by producing a mini-documentary.

The UDC Digital Media program continues to provide its students with exceptional opportunities to grow and succeed, preparing them to make significant contributions to journalism. See a “reel-time” video of their experience here.
