Dancing makes popular workout fun
A workout combining dancing and toning is helping women who want to avoid the gym.
Are you tired of going to the gym to work out on those boring exercise machines? Well, join the devotees of Mixxedfit, a popular exercise program that combines explosive full body dance with toning movements.
Instructor Nicole Sheffield, who teaches at Bikram Hot Yoga in Ivy City in Northeast D.C. was drawn to the practice because of her own love of dance.

“One day during my first Zumba class, the instructor pulled me to the front of the class to help demonstrate the dance moves. It really restored my confidence; I knew I could teach dance,” said Sheffield, who has always wanted to teach fitness.
Today, Sheffield is a certified Mixxed fit instructor who creates her own routines. She instructs a class of women of all ages, shapes and sizes, dancing, kicking, bouncing, while listening to trendy hip hop sounds.
Class Participant Develya Jenkins McCullough says “I love getting physically fit. Having better endurance, balance and flexibility makes me feel wonderful and knowing that I am burning calories. It’s the perfect stress reliever.”
Sheffield thinks it’s really important for women to take care of their health.
“Women do so much for so many people, and we have the tendency to forget about taking care of ourselves, especially when it comes to our heart and mind. Dance Fitness gives us the opportunity to make our hearts healthier and stronger,” she said.
The class meets on Fridays from 8pm-9pm at Bikram Hot Yoga Ivy City.
