When it comes to eating for less,  grocery shopping is probably the best route to go. But what if you’re not good in the kitchen? Well, luckily finding good low cost food is not difficult in the city. There are small family-owned places, such as the renowned Ben’s Chili Bowl, which has two locations, as well as several local branches of national fast food restaurants all of whom have reward programs that you can use to unlock free meals!  Osaze Moore, an D.C. resident for three years, says &pizza is his top choice. “I love how you can just freestyle and make your pizza any kind of way! They also have delicious drinks as well!”

Below is a list of some options we like.

Ben’s Chili Bowl: Around for more than 60 years, Ben’s is a staple of the Washington D.C. experience. There are locations on U Street NW and H Street NE. Known for its famous chili and half smokes, a meal can be purchased there for as low as $5.95!

Cava: Popular in this area, Cava is known for its very fresh ingredients and variety. Started by three friends in nearby Rockville, Md., the eatery serves Mediterranean food. You make a bowl by choosing a base – grains or salad, for example. Then you add a protein, like chicken, beef or even lamb, a spread and then some toppings. You can get one for around $8.

Oohhs N Aahhs: This soul food restaurant has won awards for its Mac and Cheese amongst others. Its chicken wings are a fan favorite, while its Colossal Crab Cake is a staple for seafood lovers. All the usual sides are available, including collard greens, potato salad and cornbread. A two-piece fish entree with one side comes in at $8.95.

Potbelly: Potbelly has locations all around Washington D.C. It offers flavorful sandwiches, milkshakes, soups and salads. It is the perfect place to grab something on the go when you are in a rush. A Potbelly sandwich meal ranges from $7.95-$9.

&Pizza: Founded in the District, it is a pizza lover’s complete dream. You can basically create your own pizza! You can choose from different doughs, sauces and toppings! A pizza at this place costs around $8.
