UDC’s first lady, students at Howard University Black girls brunch
A year after making a visit to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Impressions of Beauty powered by Sally Beauty hosted a “Black Girls Matter Meetup Brunch” on the campus of Howard University. With the focus on celebrating black college women at HBCUs, the event included inspiring speakers and led great conversations with the attendees, along with great food and exciting giveaways.
Despite this event not being at UDC, there were still lots of Firebirds represented, as well as the First Lady of UDC, Tonya B. Edington. She participated in the festivities and celebrated the young women who have excelled in and outside of the classroom. Fendian Pollock, also known as “Miss. UDC,” and Senior Digital Media and Music major Asha Moore-Smith were also in attendance. They made sure to leave their mark on this brunch, as Pollock delivered a prayer and Moore-Smith was honored with flowers by Impressions of Beauty CEO Ashlee Gomez for her 3.9 GPA.
The brunch included panel speakers and sponsors from Shea Moisture, Camille Rose, and Sally Beauty, supporting the event theme “Where Purposeful Paths Lead to Resilient Journeys.”
“This unforgettable event was more than a brunch – it was a celebration of purpose, power, and the resilient journeys of Black women,” First Lady Edington wrote in a heartfelt post on LinkedIn. “It was a safe space for Black women to be uplifted and celebrated. For our brilliance to be uplifted and our beauty to be lauded was amazing. It was something that they (Impressions of Beauty) should keep doing because it is needed for us.” said soon-to-be UDC graduate Asha Moore-Smith.
This brunch highlighted the very strong partnership between the two HBCUs in the District of Columbia while building unity and connections for Black women that will last a lifetime.
