UDC’s Chorale Performs at “HBCU Night” at NBA Game
The University of the District of Columbia’s Chorale delivered a standout performance of the Star-Spangled Banner during HBCU Night at a Washington Wizards NBA game, broadcast to a nationally televised audience and in front of 17,000 attendees at the Capital One Arena. Under the direction of Music Director Johnny Butler, the Chorale captured the moment to showcase their musical talents on a grand stage.
Comprising 12 talented students, the UDC Chorale was initially scheduled to perform the Star-Spangled Banner and Lift Every Voice and Sing. However, Lift Every Voice and Sing was unexpectedly removed from the program at the last minute. “It was very disappointing,” said Asha Moore-Smith, a senior digital media and music major. Despite the setback, Moore-Smith expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity to perform in front of such a large audience.
The event also allowed Chorale members to rub shoulders with NBA stars, including Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young and Washington Wizards guard Jordan Poole. Yet, the true spotlight remained on the Chorale as they delivered a powerful, polished performance highlighting their musical prowess.
Reflecting on the experience, Chorale member Victoria Williams said, “Although the audience was larger than what we were used to, we were not nervous.” She described the anticipation as the group waited in the tunnel for their cue to enter the court, emphasizing their confidence and readiness.
The Chorale’s professionalism, preparation, and talent were on full display as their participation in HBCU Night honored the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and underscored the excellence of UDC’s music program. This performance was a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing artistic talent and providing students with opportunities to shine at community events.
