New cafeteria offers healthier options
UDC’s revamped cafe is offering a wide range of food choices, including healthy ones.
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) has a new cafe and it is offering students more choices, especially healthy ones.
It is based on a concept called the “VVK” (vegan and vegetarian kitchen) where vegan and vegetarian items will be featured on the menu; not only on the hot bar, but for grilled items too, according to Chief Executive Chef Jacqueline Craig.

Some other healthier choices will consist of baked entrees and foods with less sugar and low carbohydrates, said Craig.
Options will also include food for students with diet restrictions. Gluten free students are welcome for example. They just have to request the items from a server. “Because once a gluten free item is held or touched by others that are not gluten free, it destroys the gluten free aspect of the product,” Craig explained.

The new eatery called the Millennium Cafe, opened on Jan.10 after the old one shut down for months due to a fire last school year. It has a larger dining area to seat students and faculty, as well as the public.
Student Montego Townsend says “I love the new cafe, the new cafe is fantastic, it looks like how a college cafe should look. It has easy access to the food; it has more variety of food. The food tastes better.”
Craig says she has high expectations for the new cafe. Her goal is to win students over by offering affordable, quality cuisine everyday. The cafe offers student discounts after 2pm, which includes an entree, one side and drink for only $5.
“This really helps my budget,” said Townsend 27, a social work major at UDC.
Not only will the cafe serve food, but alcohol as well. “Our intention is to have a nice bar where students can break away from home or school to have a nice happy hour along with musical entertainment,” said Craig.
