The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) kicked off its annual Spring Bling with a carnival on Tuesday, April 8, transforming Dennard Plaza into a festival filled with music, food, and games, despite the chilly, un-springlike weather.

With temperatures around 50 degrees and strong winds sweeping across the plaza, many students and staff were bundled up in hoodies and coats, and some even chose to skip the event entirely. But for those who decided to face the cold, Spring Bling still delivered on its promise of a fun day.

The standout hit of the day was free custom spray-paint T-shirts. Students lined up to get their names or favorite phrases airbrushed onto tees in vibrant colors, creating personalized souvenirs to take home.

“I came just for the spray paint shirts,” said UDC sophomore Renee Miller, who said she almost didn’t attend because of the weather. “But I’m glad I did it was actually worth it!”

Another crowd favorite was the classic carnival-style barbecue. Plates of hot dogs, burgers, and ribs helped warm up bellies, with sweet treats like caramel apples and cotton candy adding to the fun. Rides were set up but remained unused due to the poor weather.

Despite the strong winds that knocked over a few food pans and sent decorations blowing across the plaza, the Office of Student Life and Services kept the energy high with upbeat music and enthusiastic volunteers. UDC student government representatives said they were happy with the turnout, considering the weather conditions, and are already looking ahead to future events with fingers crossed for warmer skies.

Those who missed Spring Bling still have a chance to join the fun. UDC’s community college campus is hosting a similar fair on April 10, offering more food, games, and giveaways.

“Spring Bling is all about building community, and even though it was cold, it felt good seeing students laugh and come together,” said Miss UDC Community College CiAhna Chloe.

Next year, organizers are hoping for a sunnier forecast. But one thing’s certain: UDC students know how to have fun in any weather. Let’s just hope that spring shows up on time next April.
