Balancing Academics and Social Life at UDC
For many students at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), college life is more than just attending classes and submitting assignments. With many juggling part-time jobs, internships, student organizations, and personal responsibilities, finding a balance can feel overwhelming. However, some students have been able to learn the art of time management. This proves that success is possible with the right techniques and mindset.
UDC students come from diverse backgrounds, with many being first-generation college students, working professionals, or involved in leadership roles on campus. According to a survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 40% of undergraduate student’s nationwide work while attending school. At UDC, that number may be even higher, as many students take on jobs to support themselves and their families.
Iyanna Jackson, a senior at UDC and an active member of several student organizations, understands the challenge of balancing commitments. “Between my classes, working at the Student Center, and being involved in track and student clubs, time management is everything,” she says. “I’ve had to learn how to prioritize what truly matters.”
Using planners, digital calendars, or even simple to-do lists can help students stay on top of deadlines and commitments. UDC senior Kyle Nolan, who works part-time while pursuing a degree in computer science, says, “I plan out my week every Sunday. If I know I have an assignment due, I set smaller goals throughout the week to complete it on time.
UDC offers several resources to support student success, such as tutoring services, mental health counseling, and career development programs. Many students find that taking advantage of these resources helps reduce stress and improve academic performance.
Balancing academics, work, and social life is no easy task, but UDC students prove that it is possible with discipline, time management, and the right support systems.
