The UDC women’s lacrosse team eviscerated Trinity Washington University (NCAA Division III) 24-5 in a shortened game on April 16, 2024, to earn its first 2024 victory.

Junior defender Michelle Mitchell (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon High School) dominated the scoreboard with seven goals off ten shots and an assist. A dynamic duo of Najee Gunter (Philadelphia, PA/Academy at Palumbo) and Jada Williams (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Hugh’s HS) tallied five goals respectively. Tiffany Canales-Velasquez (Riverdale, MD/Parkdale High School), the program’s lone senior, earned two goals while five additional Firebirds scored once.

After a strong start, UDC maintained their dominance, leading 15-3 at the end of the first quarter and extending it to 17-4 by halftime. A 5-1 Firebird run in the third quarter prompted Trinity (DC) to end the contest. This victory not only marked the team’s first win of 2024 but also set a new record for the most goals scored in program history, a feat that should make the audience feel proud and excited.

The UDC defense was impenetrable, holding Trinity (DC) to just six total shots and seven ground balls. On the offensive end, the Firebirds were relentless, effortlessly taking 38 shots, securing 21 ground balls and 21 draw controls. The team’s special teams were also on point, with a perfect 12-12 clearing effort and a successful conversion of nine out of twelve free position shots, a display of the team’s impressive defensive and offensive prowess that should leave the audience feeling impressed and confident in the team’s abilities.

Finally, D’Youville University (6-9, 3-2 ECC) travels to UDC (1-10, 0-4 ECC) in the season closer on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. hosted at Georgetown Day School.
