At 9 pm, television screens, laptops, and tablets are glowing in bedrooms. Viewers all over the world are tuning into a show to make them feel something, searching for the stories that may change their lives. Have you ever wondered what people are watching these days? What do these three shows say about what people want now, and what they are looking for in media?

As streaming platforms continue to grow, viewers are continuing to interact with stories. According to Nielsen, streaming since May 2025 has been the dominant viewing format, with a usage increase of 71%. Many people watch different genres, and that’s okay. What people choose to watch, whether it’s a medical drama, romance adaptations, or even thrillers it connects a generation. These three shows are the main topics of conversation in 2026, and what you should be watching.

1. The Pitt

The medical drama that everyone and their mom has been talking about. The Pitt has become one of the most talked-about medical dramas, pulling in viewers with its accuracy, keeping everyone on the edge, and delivering high-stakes, heart-wrenching moments all unfolding in a hospital. Did I mention it’s understaffed? Yes, it gets better.

The Pitt is a medical procedural drama created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells and Noah Wyle (character Michael “Robby” Robinavitch), which follows an emergency department and each episode takes place each hour of their shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, and the hardships that they face during their 15-hour shift, while also dealing with underfunding and shortage of staff and materials.

Medical dramas have surged in popularity since the pandemic, becoming one of the most-watched genres. But in the last year, viewership has climbed even higher. Why is that? According to an article by Betches, a TV critic, explains, “What tends to make a really great television show is a specific combination of something that feels brand new every episode and something that feels very familiar and reliable”.

And that’s true especially when involving The Pitt, which is highly praised by critics and the audience, for their portrayal of the medical field, and the psychological warfare that happens during a post-pandemic, and some of the audience who are healthcare workers, whether that be doctors, nurses, ER practitioners, or medical students.  And others who are not in the medical field, but can still match and recognize the feelings of burnout, hardwork and fatigue that are reflected within the storytelling of these characters. And how it’s a worldwide feeling.

This high-paced drama keeps you locked in, adrenaline surging with every scene. At times, you can imagine yourself being inside that chaotic ED and feeling the same urgency and pressure as the characters. Currently, you can watch the entirety of Season and currently Season 2 of The Pitt streaming now on HBO Max, and it comes out every Thursday at 9 PM ET.

2. Heated Rivalry

The romantic Canadian TV Show that took the world by storm, debuted last November and has reached over 10.6 million viewers in the US since its finale aired. Heated Rivalry combines two different niches and spaces: sports drama and romance. Originally published and created by Rachel Reid, the show blends a steamy, passionate, slow-burning storytelling from page to screen.

Romance as a genre has always been popular with the public, no matter if it’s in a movie, a book, or a television show. But as of recently, due to social media and the community BookTok on the social media platform TikTok, romance has gained more traction and attention. In an Emerald Media article, romance was often described as “formulaic or frivolous”. Digital technology in this age has brought more energy to this genre, helping and leading to more opportunities for bigger, larger Hollywood productions.

But this show tells us that romance doesn’t need a big budget or an A-list cast. With the right director, the right cast, and the right platform, anything can happen. Heated Rivalry is a Canadian sports romance television series created by Jacob Tierney for the platform Crave, but was later moved to the platform HBO Max in the US, after the massive social media buzz following the trailer’s drop for the show. This show portrays a love story between two professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, who compete on rival teams, and have an on-ice rivalry, but in private, the two develop a casual friends with benefits sexual relationship, but later over the years develops into something more romantic and the two have to confront the feelings that they have for each other.

This show is sexy, steamy, but also heartfelt. Between the sexy scenes, in contrast to the heartfelt moments, are not only between the two main characters, but also between the background characters, creating this heartfelt love story between two men who just want to express themselves and the story that is built on chemistry and emotion. You can currently view the full series on HBO Max.

3. Interview With The Vampire

AMC’s Interview With The Vampire shows a perfect display of a mix of gothic horror, romance, and drama into one amazing series. Based on the original material of Anne Rice’s books, the show modernizes Rice’s writing into its characters and settings. And portrays themes that deal with race, power, queerness, intimacy, and identity.

This series is underrated and one of the best shows in terms of book-to-screen adaptations (in my opinion). Interview With The Vampire is an American gothic horror television series that was developed by Rolin Jones for AMC, but the actual story was created by none other than Anne Rice. It tells the story of Louis de Pointe de Lac, as told to journalist Daniel Malloy, to whom backed in 1973 and was given an unpublished interview. and his journey as a black man in New Orleans during 1910, turning from man to vampire by the vampire Lestat De Lioncourt. Louis goes through an adventure struggling with his new profound identity, sexuality, and relationship with Lestat. Along with their new creation of Claudia.

Throughout this interview, you learn the ups and downs, the drama, and the violence in their relationships. Which causes Daniel to question what is really true about Louis’s story, from what was given prior, and whether Louis is really telling the truth.

What I really appreciate about this show is that it explores race in a way that is not cliché and not exploiting black trauma. According to The Root, “the series is not going to shy away from how their different races factor into their life experiences. In fact, it perfectly blends race into every period of Louis’ life, highlighting in subtle and not-so-subtle ways it never goes away, no matter how rich and powerful a Black man becomes”. The show’s popularity is still rising slowly, but more people are paying attention to the beautiful storytelling, writing, and visual aspects of this show. Seasons 1 and 2 of IWTV are currently streaming on AMC+ and Netflix. And Season 3 is on its way this year.

Overall, these three shows reflect culture. Viewers are gravitated towards realism, emotional passion/intimacy, and identity within these shows. Television is a place where audiences can find themselves and process whatever may be happening in their lives, to relate to these shows. And I hope that everyone can watch at least one of these in order to feel something that you may have been searching for and or missing.  Well, there you have it! These three are must-watch shows that will surely keep you entertained and keep your eyes glued to the screen. If you have watched any of them, I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. And if you have any more recommendations for our next round-up, please drop them below in the comments! Until next time, this is Kyla Bigby signing off.
